Around 30,000 youths are called for conscription - here SVT's reporter tests how it works

Approximately 30,000 youths born in 2008 are being called up for military conscription testing in Sweden.

In Sweden, around 30,000 youths who were born in 2008 have been called by the Plikt- och prövningsverket (Swedish Conscription Agency) to undergo conscription tests. This is part of a process where about 100,000 young people received questionnaires regarding their health, personality, physical condition, and educational background earlier this year. These documents served as a basis for selecting those who will participate in the conscription testing program, which will take place between May 2026 and April 2027.

The conscription process consists of various stages, starting with a theoretical test that evaluates verbal understanding, logical thinking, and spatial judgment. Following this is a health examination conducted by a nurse, followed by a general health check performed by a physician. The outcomes from these medical and physical assessments are then compiled to determine the overall suitability for military service.

The military conscription tradition in Sweden holds significant importance not only for national defense but also for the integration of young people into civic responsibilities. The involvement of media, as seen with SVT's testing of the conscription process, emphasizes transparency and public engagement regarding military service, potentially growing understanding and acceptance among the youth regarding this obligation.
