TotalEnergies to inaugurate 5MW solar plant at OML 58
TotalEnergies plans to inaugurate a 5MW solar plant at OML 58 to power the Ubeta Gas Project and reduce emissions as part of its energy expansion strategy in Nigeria.
TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited has announced its intention to inaugurate a five-megawatt solar power plant at the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 58 site, designated for the Ubeta Gas Project. This announcement was made by the Managing Director, Mathieu Bouyer, during a panel session at the 2026 NIES in Abuja, focusing on investment and opportunities within Africa's oil and gas sector. Bouyer emphasized that this solar initiative is a fundamental part of elevating the Ubeta Gas development while aligning with global sustainability efforts to cut down on emissions.
The solar power plant is designed to deliver a dedicated power supply for operations at OML 58, thus reducing the dependency on conventional energy sources and significantly lowering the production's carbon intensity. Bouyer hailed the project as an essential step towards establishing the Ubeta Gas field as one of the pioneering near-net-zero gas developments globally, showcasing the company's commitment to integrating renewable energy into its operations in Nigeria.
In reiterating the companyβs overarching strategy, Bouyer highlighted the importance of increasing energy capacities while also pursuing initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint. As TotalEnergies moves forward with this project, it reflects a larger trend within the industry focusing on balancing energy production with environmental responsibilities, which could influence future investments and operational approaches in the African gas sector.
