Government will create protection for agriculture and industry before the approval of the Mercosur-EU agreement in the Senate, says Alckmin
Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin announced plans for protective measures for the agriculture and industry sectors before the Senate votes on the Mercosur-EU trade agreement.
On Wednesday, Brazil's Vice President Geraldo Alckmin stated that a decree establishing protective measures for the agriculture and industrial sectors in Brazil's trade agreements, known as safeguards, will be issued prior to the Senate's vote on the Mercosur-European Union free trade agreement. Alckmin emphasized the importance of these measures in addressing concerns from various sectors of the economy.
The draft of the decree is set to be sent to the Civil House of the Presidency on the same day and the government aims to finalize and edit the decree in the upcoming days. He highlighted the pressure from the agribusiness sector for the swift enactment of these protections, as they had advocated for the decree's publication before the vote in the Chamber of Deputies also scheduled for Wednesday.
Alckmin expressed optimism regarding this historic agreement that has been 25 years in the making, noting its significance as the largest agreement between economic blocs globally, representing 720 million people and $22 trillion in economic output. The governmentβs effort to establish these protections aims to alleviate concerns among producers and ensure that Brazil can engage fully and confidently in this landmark trade deal.
