Brazilian wine should be protected from competition in EU-Mercosur agreement through safeguards, says Alckmin

Brazil's interim president, Geraldo Alckmin, announced that Brazilian wines will be protected through safeguards in the EU-Mercosur trade agreement.

Geraldo Alckmin, Brazil's interim president and Minister of Industry, stated that Brazilian wines will need protective measures against competition as part of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. During the Wine Festival in Rio Grande do Sul, he highlighted that the agreement includes a chapter dedicated to safeguards, which will allow the Brazilian government to temporarily suspend tariff advantages if necessary.

Alckmin explained that these safeguards are crucial in protecting local industries from sudden surges in competition or export taxes. The regulation of these safeguards is expected to be implemented by President Lula through a decree, ensuring that the guidelines are officially recognized and actionable should any challenges arise in the international market.

The proposal is currently being drafted by the Ministry of Development and Itamaraty, the Brazilian foreign ministry, signifying the government's proactive approach to maintaining the integrity of its wine production industry in the face of international agreements.
