Tripartite memorandum on the assessment of small modular reactors in Lithuania signed
Lithuania has signed a tripartite memorandum to evaluate the implementation of small modular reactor technology involving key stakeholders in the nuclear energy sector.
Lithuania's Ministry of Energy announced the signing of a tripartite memorandum aimed at assessing the potential implementation of small modular reactor (SMR) technology in the country. This agreement was signed on Wednesday by three entities: the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (IAE), the U.S. company GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy LLC (GVH), and the Polish company Synthos Green Energy S.A. (SGE). The memorandum establishes a framework for a detailed evaluation of technical and economic opportunities associated with the deployment of this emerging nuclear technology.
The assessment outlined in the memorandum will focus on various aspects critical to the successful integration of SMR technology, including analyzing technological options, safety and licensing requirements, as well as economic and market conditions. According to Ε½. VaiΔiΕ«nas, a representative from the Ministry, this collaboration aims to harness Lithuania's experience in nuclear energy, the expertise of Altra's specialists, and the latest advancements from American partners in developing this next-generation technology, thereby determining its applicability in Lithuania.
This initiative is particularly noteworthy as it places Lithuania at the forefront of exploring modern nuclear technologies, which are increasingly being considered for their potential to meet energy demands while ensuring safety and sustainability. With small modular reactors being viewed as a flexible and innovative solution for energy generation, the joint efforts of these companies could pave the way for the integration of new energy solutions within the region, potentially impacting future energy policies and nuclear energy strategies in Lithuania and beyond.
