Z. Vaičiūnas, visiting Paris: Lithuania will assess the potential of nuclear energy
Lithuania is evaluating the potential of nuclear energy, including small modular reactors, in light of climate change and energy security needs, according to Minister Z. Vaičiūnas.
During his visit to Paris, Minister Z. Vaičiūnas emphasized the importance of assessing all possible electricity production technologies for sustainable energy system development in Lithuania. He highlighted that, considering the challenges posed by climate change and the need for energy security, the country will investigate the potential of nuclear energy, particularly focusing on small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. These innovations could provide reliable, low-carbon electricity generation while adhering to the highest nuclear safety standards.
The European Commission recently unveiled a strategy aimed at the development and deployment of SMRs within the European Union. This strategy is designed to facilitate the first SMR projects in Europe by the early 2030s and ensures coordinated collaboration between EU member states, industry, and research institutions. The Commission’s plan reflects a broader commitment to enhancing energy sustainability across Europe and addressing climate priorities.
Minister Vaičiūnas's discussions in Paris also included meetings with representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), indicating Lithuania's proactive approach in engaging with international bodies to ensure the safe implementation of nuclear projects. Such initiatives are essential as Lithuania seeks to balance its energy needs with environmental considerations, paving the way for a new era of energy production that aligns with EU goals for carbon neutrality and energy independence.
