City Hall announces the start of recovery works on the Filadélfia viaduct in Governador Valadares
The City Hall of Governador Valadares has announced the commencement of recovery works on the Filadélfia viaduct due to safety concerns following inspection reports.
The City Hall of Governador Valadares has officially announced the start of recovery works on the Filadélfia viaduct, located on Avenida Israel Pinheiro, during a press conference held on October 25. The project, which is estimated to cost around R$ 1.7 million, is scheduled to begin on October 27 and is expected to take approximately 90 days to complete according to Mayor Coronel Sandro. This structure plays a crucial role in the city's transportation network, handling about 35% of the vehicle traffic within the municipality's total fleet of 176,000 vehicles.
The viaduct has been completely closed since March 2025 after technical assessments indicated an imminent risk of collapse. It has been reported that the viaduct, which connects the neighborhoods of Esplanada and Esplanadinha, has not received adequate maintenance since it was constructed more than 40 years ago. Initially, the structure was partially blocked starting in February 2024 pending further evaluations and safety measures.
Mayor Coronel Sandro emphasized the urgent need for these works, citing public safety as a top priority. By restoring the viaduct, the city aims to alleviate traffic congestion that has escalated since its full closure. The revitalization efforts may also enhance the overall infrastructure and safety measures in one of the city’s major traffic arteries, ensuring better mobility for residents once the project is completed.
