ABC began to smell of feces โ€“ the reason was uncovered under the charging area

A broken septic tank pipe caused a significant odor issue at an ABC charging station in Toijala, Finland.

Late Thursday evening, February 19, an ABC charging station in Toijala, Akaa, began to emit a strong odor due to a broken pipe originating from the septic tankโ€™s emptying point. According to Juho Lehto, a representative from the Pirkanmaa Cooperative's ABC charging stations, the harsh cold had caused the pipe to freeze and become clogged, which led to a considerable amount of sludge leaking out from under the cover of a well onto the charging area overnight between Thursday and Friday. Despite several cleaning efforts amidst the biting cold, the issue of odors and sludge was not fully resolved. During the following weekend, extensive cleaning efforts were initiated, involving steam cleaning, a vacuum truck, and a wheel loader. However, the severe frost hindered these operations from proceeding as planned. To mitigate the situation, snow was spread over the sludge to prevent it from spreading further. Lehto emphasized the need for quicker isolation of the charging area immediately after the incident to reduce the subsequent effects of the problem. The incident highlights the challenges faced by infrastructure maintenance during extreme weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of prompt responses to prevent such nuisances.
