Jukka-Pekka made a harsh discovery at the charging station - ended up with a 3,500 euro bill as Tesla and ABC blamed each other
A Finnish man faced a hefty bill after an issue with charging his Tesla at an ABC station sparked a blame game between the two companies.
Jukka-Pekka Seppänen, a resident of Helsinki, encountered a troubling situation while attempting to charge his Tesla at an ABC service station during a trip to Tahko in September 2024. After utilizing a slower AC charging method, which transforms alternating current to direct current, he was immediately alerted that there was a fault with the charging process, as the battery was charging incredibly slowly. He decided to disconnect from the charger using the ABC app, only to be met with unexpected drama as a loud pop resonated at the station, leading to immediate concerns about the charger’s functionality.
After disconnecting the charging cable, Seppänen reported hearing a loud bang and witnessing a small flash from the end of the charging cable, coupled with burn marks that suggested overheating. Despite still retaining approximately one-third of the battery's charge, he chose to continue his journey toward Savonia, but was forced to stop in Mikkeli due to the disconcerting incident. The encounter turned costly, with the overall billing for the incident amounting to 3,500 euros, showcasing the potential financial disputes that can arise from electric vehicle charging problems.
The situation has raised questions regarding liability and service standards at charging stations, particularly as both Tesla and ABC have pointed fingers, leaving Seppänen in a challenging position. The incident highlights ongoing challenges that electric vehicle owners may face with infrastructure reliability, and the repercussions that malfunctioning equipment can have on their travel plans and financial situations, potentially stirring discussions about accountability in the fast-evolving EV market.
