50th Anniversary of the ‘March 1 Democratic National Declaration’ Critique of Yushin... Commemorative Event on the 27th

The 50th anniversary of the ‘March 1 Democratic National Declaration’ will be commemorated on March 27 with an event at the Korean Christian Church Center.

March 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the ‘March 1 Democratic National Declaration,’ which was announced at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul in 1975. This declaration was a response to the political repressions of Park Chung-hee's regime, particularly focusing on the judicial murders linked to the Inhyeokdang restoration incident and the declaration of Emergency Measure No. 9 that prohibited criticism of the Yushin Constitution. The declaration urged for the return of democracy as a national objective and emphasized the importance of national unification, highlighting the need for a judiciary independent of governmental influence. Following this declaration, 11 participants, including Kim Dae-jung, were arrested by the regime, showcasing the oppressive political climate of the time.
