Nutrition experts: the traffic light system would guide consumers to healthier choices

Estonia is considering adopting the Nutri-Score food labeling system to help consumers make healthier food choices.

Estonia is contemplating joining the Nutri-Score food labeling system this fall, which would utilize a traffic light-like scale to compare products of the same category based on their nutritional quality. Local nutrition experts believe this system would provide consumers with a better understanding of food products, making it easier for them to make informed decisions in grocery stores. A more prominent red label would suggest that the product should be consumed less frequently rather than discouraging its purchase altogether.

The Nutri-Score system assesses the healthiness of food products on a five-point scale, ranging from green 'A' (healthy) to red 'E' (unhealthy). According to Janne Lauk, a nutrition expert from the Health Development Institute of Estonia, the system simplifies the information found on packaging, allowing individuals to make quicker decisions based on the color category a product belongs to. With the growing trend of consumers seeking healthier options, such a system could play a crucial role in promoting better dietary choices.

The Nutri-Score labeling system was first implemented in France and has since been adopted in several other countries, including Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. Estonia's consideration of this system aligns with a broader European initiative aimed at improving public health through better food labeling practices and informing consumers about their dietary choices in a more straightforward manner.
