The Drama at Alytus Gymnasium Continues: Absent Teachers
The situation at Alytus Gymnasium in Lithuania escalates as teachers refuse to conduct classes following the dismissal of an ethics teacher.
The Alytus Gymnasium in Lithuania has been thrust into turmoil following the announcement of the dismissal of ethics teacher M. Platūkienė, which was reported weeks prior to this crisis. Teachers in the gymnasium began protesting by refusing to conduct classes, disrupting the educational process. This shift has garnered the attention of the Lithuanian Education Workers' Trade Union (LŠDPS), leading to concerns about the legitimacy and coordination of the strike action taken by the faculty.
Alytaus city mayor, Nerijus Cesiulis, previously stated that the strike had not been properly negotiated, expressing his concerns over the unforeseen halt in the educational processes at the school. The leader of LŠDPS, Andrius Navickas, also refrained from labeling the ongoing situation as a strike. According to the Lithuanian Labor Code, specific conditions must be met before a strike is officially announced, including a five-day advance notice to the employer regarding the strike's commencement.
Current reports indicate that 18 out of 78 staff members at Alytus Gymnasium are not showing up for work, which emphasizes the scale of the issue at hand. The conflict may not only impact the teachers' work environment but could also have repercussions for students' education, drawing local media attention towards issues related to teachers’ rights and labor negotiations in Lithuania’s educational system.
