Understand why radars that fine those who run red lights are called 'Caetanos' in RS (and learn at which intersections they will be installed)
A new radar system that fines drivers for running red lights, known as 'Caetanos,' will begin operations in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as part of a traffic safety initiative.
In Porto Alegre, Brazil, over 50 drivers have been caught running red lights since January 6, as part of a trial run for the new Red Light Advance Detectors (DAS) initiated by the city. During this testing phase, only educational notices were issued to offenders. However, starting from March 1, two DAS units will operate effectively, penalizing drivers who violate traffic signals at designated intersections, thereby enhancing road safety in the city.
The radars, which have been affectionately nicknamed 'Caetanos,' in homage to Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso, underscore the blend of culture and innovation in traffic management. These detection devices are set to be installed at critical intersections, including the Avenida Protásio Alves with Rua Vicente da Fontoura and Avenida Bento Gonçalves with Avenida Princesa Isabel, where they will first undergo testing before full implementation.
This initiative reflects a broader effort by the municipal government to reduce traffic violations and promote safer driving practices. As the DAS systems become operational, they aim to not only deter future violations but also educate the public about the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, thus helping to prevent accidents and enhance public safety in Porto Alegre.
