Cheong Wa Dae Establishes National Safety Secretary Position, Appoints Lee Jong-won as Chief of Chungbuk Police

The South Korean government has announced the establishment of a National Safety Secretary position under the Office of Civil Affairs to enhance public safety and crime prevention.

On the 25th, Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House) announced that it will be establishing a National Safety Secretary position under the Office of Civil Affairs, which is intended to serve as a control tower for crime prevention and public safety policy. Spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong explained that this initiative aims to strengthen national response capabilities against various crimes and threats that infringe on the safety of citizens, aligning with President Lee Jae-myung's administration's core value of protecting the lives and safety of the people.

The National Safety Secretary will oversee the coordination of crime prevention and public safety policies, ensuring that these strategies are continuously evaluated and improved in line with relevant laws and regulations. The role includes managing responses to crime and accidents systematically, as well as conducting comprehensive analyses of public safety and crime trends to identify and address factors that threaten the well-being of citizens. This reflective approach aims to create a safer environment where citizens can live without fear.

The position has been designated to Lee Jong-won, the current Chief of the Chungbuk Police Agency, who is seen as well-qualified for the role given his extensive experience within the police force. Appointed in September of last year, he has held various significant positions in the police system, suggesting a strong capability to implement the national government's safety plans effectively. The establishment of this position signals the government's commitment to enhancing public safety and making proactive efforts to prevent risks that threaten everyday life.
