Korea and China Join Hands to Counter 'Transnational Crime'... Park Seong-joo, Head of National Investigation Agency, Visits China

The Chief of the National Investigation Agency of South Korea is visiting China's Ministry of Public Security to discuss cooperation against transnational crimes like voice phishing and online fraud.

Park Seong-joo, the head of South Korea's National Investigation Agency, is set to visit the Ministry of Public Security in China to discuss collaborative measures against transnational crimes including voice phishing and online scams. This visit, which takes place from October 9 to October 11, is a follow-up to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed during the South Korea-China summit at APEC in November 2022, which aims to enhance cooperation in various fields related to crime combating.

The MOU outlines specific areas for collaboration such as the collection, exchange, and analysis of information and evidence related to scam crimes, as well as joint operations and coordinated investigations. During his three-day trip, Park will aim to work on concrete implementation strategies that can make these agreements actionable, which will involve establishing designated contact points and regular working meetings. Additionally, discussions will focus on practical cooperation methods concerning information sharing on voice phishing, tracking criminal proceeds, and apprehending offenders who have fled abroad.

The South Korean police agency emphasizes that the establishment of a sustainable and stable institutional framework will allow for more effective responses to transnational crime. They plan to continue tackling these issues through a government-wide special task force dedicated to combating transnational crimes, aiming to enhance international cooperation, disrupt crime methods, and conduct stringent investigations.
