Second Comprehensive Special Investigation Team Begins 170-Day Journey with Unveiling Ceremony: 'Thorough Investigation Without Sanctuary'

South Korea's second comprehensive special investigation team has kicked off a major inquiry lasting up to 170 days aimed at investigating unresolved allegations from past probes.

The newly inaugurated second comprehensive special investigation team in South Korea, led by Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young, held its unveiling ceremony on the 25th, marking the start of an extensive investigation set to last for a maximum of 170 days. The team's mandate is to thoroughly investigate allegations that were not addressed by previous special investigations, underlining their commitment to political neutrality and adherence to legal guidelines without any sacred cows in the process.

At the unveiling, Kwon emphasized the importance of maintaining the team's independence and impartiality as they tackle sensitive investigations related to national security and political conduct. The team has a considerable workforce of up to 251 members, including attorneys and investigative staff, and will prioritize 17 key investigative targets, many linked to significant national security risks and allegations of political misconduct involving former President Yoon Suk-yeol and First Lady Kim Kun-hee. These investigations will cover a broad range of alleged crimes including domestic insurgency plans and potential abuse of civil rights.

The establishment of this second investigation team comes as a response to public dissatisfaction with the outcomes of earlier probes. The special prosecutor program is described as a 'constitutional check' designed to uphold the rule of law within the criminal justice system, reinforcing public confidence in the state's ability to address corruption and misconduct without bias. As the team prepares to launch its investigations, they will work closely with related agencies that were part of the previous special prosecutions to ensure a comprehensive approach to the inquiries ahead.
