‘Second Comprehensive Special Investigation’ Special Investigation Assistants: Kwon Young-bin, Kim Jung-min, Kim Ji-mi, Jin Eul-jong
Four special investigation assistants have been appointed for the second comprehensive special investigation team in South Korea to address unresolved allegations from previous major investigations.
In South Korea, President Lee Jae-myung has officially appointed four special investigation assistants for the second comprehensive special investigation team, which aims to clarify unresolved allegations stemming from three previous major special investigations. The selected candidates include Kwon Young-bin, Kim Jung-min, Kim Ji-mi, and Jin Eul-jong, each bringing notable legal experience to the team.
Kwon Young-bin, aged 60, is a seasoned lawyer and has previously served as a permanent member of the Special Investigation Committee for the Sewol ferry disaster. He also played a role as a representative in the impeachment trial of former President Yoon Seok-yeol. Kim Jung-min and Jin Eul-jong, both with military legal backgrounds, were part of the same team that represented Yoon during his constitutional impeachment proceedings. On the other hand, Kim Ji-mi has a legal background as well, having held the position of deputy secretary for the Lawyers' Association for a Democratic Society.
The second comprehensive special investigation team is set to focus on lingering allegations that previous special investigations failed to resolve. According to the Special Investigation Act, the team can consist of five special investigation assistants, up to 15 dispatched prosecutors, and a maximum of 100 special investigators, as well as 130 dispatched public officials. The initial investigation period is set for 90 days, with provisions for two additional extensions of 30 days each.
