Financial Support for Crime Victims: Police and Shinhan Financial Hope Foundation Provide 3.2 Billion Won to 2,000 Individuals
South Korea's police and Shinhan Financial Hope Foundation have provided 3.2 billion won in emergency financial support to over 2,000 crime victims struggling with economic hardships over the past two years.
South Korea's police agency, in collaboration with the Shinhan Financial Hope Foundation and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, has disclosed the provision of over 3.2 billion won in economic assistance to more than 2,000 crime victims who faced urgent financial needs in the past two years. This initiative, commenced following a partnership agreement in April 2024, aims to alleviate the difficulties in daily life faced by victims of crime through financial support beyond the regular ‘emergency assistance’ system funded by a national victim protection fund.
In particular, this year’s focus on assisting victims of 'relational crimes' has highlighted specific cases, such as a woman whose residence was consumed by a fire set by her ex-boyfriend who could not accept their breakup, receiving 3 million won for emergency housing and living expenses. Another victim, who struggled with emotional distress due to her partner's ongoing violence and exploitation, received the same financial support alongside psychological counseling, illustrating the comprehensive approach taken to support victims in need. Many victims have expressed the profound impact of this assistance, sharing personal accounts of how it has provided them hope and the means to regain stability in their lives.
Looking ahead, the Shinhan Financial Hope Foundation aims to expand its aid program to reach 2,000 households with 3 billion won in funding this year. The police emphasized their commitment to enhancing their support system for crime victims and fostering collaboration between public and private sectors to ensure victims receive practical help. The overall initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for systemic support for crime victims in South Korea, indicating a shift toward more robust safety nets for vulnerable individuals within society.
