Elderly woman who reported rape on bus identifies driver as suspect after seeing camera images
An elderly woman has identified the bus driver, who she alleges raped her, as the suspect after reviewing security footage.
An elderly woman, who reported being raped on a bus in downtown Rio de Janeiro, has identified the bus driver as the suspect following the review of security camera footage. The identification took place soon after she accessed the footage from the bus operated by Sou Transportes, specifically on line 383 from Realengo to Praça da República, where the alleged incident occurred. She reported the incident to the Women’s Police Station in the city center where she provided details of the assault.
The Civil Police have confirmed that they have identified the suspect but have not disclosed his name. Investigators revealed that the man had previously faced charges for sexual harassment that were later suspended under certain conditions. The attack reportedly occurred when the driver turned off the lights inside the bus prior to committing the abuse, a tactic that aligns with the victim's account of the events.
The elderly victim expressed her gratitude for being given the opportunity to identify her attacker and described him as a 'monster,' reinforcing the traumatic impact of the incident on her as she takes steps to pursue justice. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety within public transportation in Brazil and the necessity for increased measures to protect vulnerable populations such as the elderly from violent crimes.
