Canada announces new Russia sanctions as invasion of Ukraine hits 4 years

Canada has announced new sanctions against Russia and pledged financial support for Ukraine to mark four years since the start of the invasion.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand officially announced new sanctions against Russia and renewed financial support for Ukraine, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion. Set before an audience including the Ukrainian ambassador and students at the University of Ottawa, Anand emphasized that Ukraine's struggle reflects a larger battle for democratic values, territorial integrity, and state sovereignty. In her address, she reiterated Canada’s steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine during this ongoing conflict.

As part of the renewed support, the Canadian government is increasing its financial commitment to Ukraine through a $2 billion extension of Operation Unifier, which has provided military training since 2014. This new pledge contributes to a staggering total of $25 billion in support from Canada to Ukraine since the conflict's inception. Anand’s reiteration of this pledge underscores the importance Canada places on international responses to aggression and the necessity of contributing to Ukraine's defense and governance.

The sanctions will target 21 individuals, 53 entities, and 100 vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations. This move is part of a broader strategy to isolate Russia economically while demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine, further reinforcing Canada’s role as a staunch supporter of Ukrainian sovereignty in the face of continued Russian hostilities. Through these actions, Canada aims to uphold and promote democratic principles challenged by the ongoing conflict in the region.
