More than 30 homes affected by heavy rains in southwestern Loja

Heavy rains in southwestern Loja, Ecuador, have affected more than 30 homes, causing significant economic losses and agricultural damage.

In the southwestern region of Loja, Ecuador, significant rainfall has resulted in the emergency status of over 30 homes across several cantons, including Calvas, Celica, Pindal, Zapotillo, and Paltas. According to local emergency management reports, losses are estimated to be around $150,000, with severe impacts on agricultural and aquacultural activities in the region.

The canton of Pindal experienced the most damage, reporting around 20 affected properties, while Celica noted 12 impacted homes. The heavy downpours have led to flooding in various areas, including Catacocha within the Paltas canton where streets faced significant inundation, resulting in the evacuation of families and compromising road access. Additionally, the roadway connecting sectors Bellos Horizontes and Taparuca in Calvas has collapsed, hindering mobility for approximately 100 families.

The affected localities primarily rely on intensive agriculture, making them particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of such weather events. The current situation underscores the need for effective emergency response and infrastructure resilience planning as these communities face the dual challenges of rebuilding and preparing for future environmental challenges.
