In order to prevent the war from reaching Latvia, it must continue to support Ukraine, states the confederation
Latvia is urged to maintain its support for Ukraine to prevent the escalation of war into its borders, according to representatives from the Ukrainian community.
In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, representatives from the Ukrainian community in Latvia, specifically from the confederation "Viche", emphasized the necessity for Latvia to continue its support for Ukraine. Despite public fatigue regarding the war, Ghirts Hotinecs, a spokesperson for the confederation, argued that supporting Ukraine is essential to prevent the repetition of history and to safeguard Latvia from potential conflict. The confederation primarily focuses on aiding the frontlines, as well as children and orphanages in Ukraine, emphasizing that the youth represents the future of the country once the war concludes.
Currently, a donation campaign is taking place in Dobele County, where funds are being raised for a convoy scheduled to leave on March 1 to deliver supplies to an orphanage housing 146 children in Ukraine. This initiative not only involves collecting monetary donations but also serves as a platform for cultural education about Ukrainian customs, including cooking traditional dishes such as borscht and organizing charity markets and theatrical performances by the Ukrainian theater "Tetris" in Latvia. These efforts aim to foster a sense of solidarity and support for those affected by the war.
Hotinecs also highlighted that for Ukrainians who wish to live in Latvia, the transition has been relatively smooth. Many have been integrating into society by learning the Latvian language and finding employment in local companies such as "Dobeles dzirnavnieks" and "Silva". This aspect underscores the resilience and adaptability of the Ukrainian population in Latvia, which continues to contribute positively to its host community while actively participating in humanitarian efforts to support their homeland during a time of crisis.
