Super tankers break the barrier of $200,000 a day - Greek shipowners lead the way
Greek shipowners are driving record high charter rates for super tankers, with daily freights surpassing $200,000.
The worldβs largest charterers are currently engaged in a fierce competition to secure available tonnage on super tankers capable of carrying two million barrels of crude. Charter rates have been breaking previous records almost daily, reflecting the growing demand in the market. As of yesterday, rates reached $208,000 for a one-way trip and $110,000 per day for a 12-month charter, indicating a thriving market influenced by increasing cargo transportation needs.
Last week, a tanker from Maran Tankers set a daily rate of $166,000 for a single voyage, showcasing a rapid escalation in pricing. Analysts have commented on the swift changes within the market, as immediately following this, the 'Nave Galactic,' owned by Navios under Angeliki Frangou, secured a rate of $184,000 a day. These developments illustrate not just the competitiveness of Greek shipowners but also the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the tanker market in response to global oil demands.
In addition, another tanker, the Olympic Leopard owned by Olympic Shipping and Management, has reportedly closed at $191,000 a day. These continuous record-breaking rates exemplify how Greek shipping companies are at the forefront of navigating these tumultuous market conditions, positioning themselves effectively to capitalize on high demand while setting new benchmarks for the industry.
