In the spot market, the rates for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) have skyrocketed to over $160,000 per day, while even one-year charters have crossed the psychological barrier of $100,000 per day for newly built tankers. The ongoing risk of conflict in the Middle East, with the possibility of U.S. attacks on Iran looming this weekend, along with the U.S.-India agreement aimed at limiting Russian exports to Asia and the European Commission's intent to impose a complete ban on shipping services from European companies against Russia, are significantly boosting demand for very large tankers.
