The Competition Council has allowed 'Latvijas aptieka' to gain decisive influence over 'Farma Balt aptieka'

The Competition Council of Latvia has approved a merger allowing 'Latvijas aptieka' to gain significant influence over 'Farma Balt aptieka', with no adverse effects on market competition anticipated.

The Competition Council of Latvia (KP) has granted approval for the merger of SIA 'Latvijas aptieka', allowing it to acquire decisive influence over SIA 'Farma Balt aptieka'. Following a thorough evaluation of the information provided by both parties, the KP concluded that the merger would not significantly alter the market structure nor diminish competition in the markets where the merging entities operate. Consequently, KP has deemed the merger permissible, indicating confidence in the continuation of a competitive environment in the pharmacy sector.

'Latvijas aptieka' is a well-established entity in Latvia, engaged in the retail of pharmaceutical products, medical devices, dietary supplements, cosmetics, and toiletries through specialized outlets, primarily pharmacies. Additionally, the company operates wholesale distribution of supplements and cosmetics throughout its pharmacy network. With ownership of 65 pharmacies and three pharmacy branches across Latvia, 'Latvijas aptieka' has a substantial presence in the market, which will enhance its competitive strategy following this acquisition.

On the other hand, 'Farma Balt aptieka' operates in similar sectors, dealing with pharmaceuticals and medical devices, as well as offering specialty products. The merger signifies a strategic consolidation in the pharmacy market of Latvia but is expected to lead to increased efficiencies rather than reduced competition, aligning with regulatory standards set forth by the KP. The absence of anticipated negative impacts on the market is crucial for stakeholders who have raised concerns regarding the concentration of market power, thus reinforcing the KP's regulatory oversight in maintaining a balanced competitive landscape in Latvia's pharmacy sector.
