Hundreds of thousands of people to get one-third off price of rail tickets - full list
Starting Sunday, eligibility for the Disabled Persons Railcard will expand, allowing hundreds of thousands more to qualify for a one-third discount on train fares.
Beginning this Sunday, significant changes will come into effect regarding the eligibility for the Disabled Persons Railcard. The updated criteria will allow a wider range of individuals with visible and non-visible disabilities to obtain the card, enhancing accessibility to public transport. This is a vital development for the disabled community, as it means that more people will be able to take advantage of this economic benefit while traveling by train.
Among those who will become eligible are individuals with a Blue Badge, those holding a disabled person’s bus pass, and people unable to drive for medical reasons or who cannot speak. Currently, about 390,000 of these railcards are active, which means many have benefitted from the substantial savings the card provides, allowing the holder and a companion to travel for a third less than the standard fare. This affordability can significantly impact the travel habits of disabled individuals and their carers.
The modification in eligibility follows a comprehensive review carried out by key organizations, including the Rail Delivery Group and the Department for Transport. The recommendations from the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee, which acts as a consultant to the government, underscore the importance of inclusive policies in public transport. The changes are aimed at not just promoting equality but also facilitating greater access to travel for those who may have been previously marginalized in transportation systems across the UK.
