Blue Badge rule change from today that will save thousands of people £126
A new rule effective today expands eligibility for the Disabled Persons Railcard, allowing more people, including Blue Badge holders, to save on rail travel costs.
Starting today, the eligibility criteria for the Disabled Persons Railcard have been expanded to allow more individuals to qualify for significant travel discounts. The change particularly benefits Blue Badge holders, who will now gain access to a railcard that offers one-third off rail tickets, leading to an average annual saving of approximately £126. This initiative aims to make rail travel more accessible for people with disabilities.
In addition to Blue Badge users, those who hold a Disabled Persons Bus Pass in any part of the UK, possess a London Disabled Persons Freedom Pass, or are unable to drive for medical reasons also qualify for the railcard. The updated criteria reflect an increased recognition of both visible and non-visible disabilities, thereby broadening the potential pool of beneficiaries. This aligns with a growing commitment to inclusivity in public transportation services across the UK.
The Disabled Persons Railcard itself costs £20 for one year or £54 for a three-year period, and it offers the added benefit of allowing one accompanying individual aged 16 or older to also receive discounted travel. This initiative is expected to alleviate transportation expenses for thousands, enhancing mobility options and supporting the independence of those with disabilities in the UK.
