Ukrainian ridesharing driver caught using a forged driver's license
A Ukrainian ridesharing driver was discovered to be operating with a fake driver's license in Lithuania.
On Friday, February 20, officers from the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania conducted a check on a Ukrainian citizen working as a ridesharing driver after concerns were raised regarding her driver's license. The authorities received a request from passenger transport controllers in Klaipėda to verify her documents. Upon investigation, it was suspected that the driver's license she presented was forged, raising significant legal issues regarding her ability to operate as a driver in Lithuania.
The investigation is being led by the Criminal Intelligence Division of the State Border Guard's Coastal Protection Border Unit, following the initiation of a pre-trial investigation into the alleged forgery of documents. This inquiry is being further carried out by colleagues from the Pagėgiai Border Unit’s Pre-Trial Investigation Division, with oversight from a prosecutor in the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor's Office. The Ukrainian woman was found to be using a Toyota Prius registered with Lithuanian license plates during her ridesharing activities.
Under Lithuanian law, the forgery or possession of a forged document can lead to severe penalties, including fines, restriction of freedom, temporary detention, or even imprisonment for up to four years. This case highlights the ongoing issues related to illegal document use among foreign workers in Lithuania, as well as the importance of rigorous checks and enforcement by border control authorities to uphold legal standards in the transportation industry.
