Asanoyama Challenges for the Championship in Spring Sumo, Hoping for "Good News" to War-torn Ukraine

Japanese sumo wrestler Asanoyama expresses hopes for good news from Ukraine while preparing for the upcoming Spring Sumo tournament.

Asanoyama, a prominent sumo wrestler from Japan, has achieved remarkable success by winning consecutive championships, and he is now ranked as an Ozeki ahead of the Spring Sumo tournament. In a recent press conference held in Matsubara City, Osaka, he acknowledged the four-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and expressed his desire to deliver positive results that would serve as good news for his homeland. His journey to Japan began in 2022 when the conflict prompted him to seek refuge with acquaintances in the country.

Reflecting on his experiences since arriving in Japan, Asanoyama shared that he has enjoyed living in the Kansai region and has joined the Anjigawa stables. He noted the warmth of the people in Osaka, expressing his fondness for local cuisine such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki. As the Spring Sumo tournament approaches, he faces the significant challenge of possibly being promoted to Yokozuna, which requires Ozeki to win two consecutive tournaments. Achieving this would place him among an elite group of wrestlers historically.

Despite the pressures associated with competing at such a high level, Asanoyama remains calm and confident, indicating that he views this attention positively. He recently received a beautifully designed ceremonial belt from a rice wholesale company, which features a depiction of onigiri (rice balls), further adding to his excitement as he prepares to take on the competition. Asanoyama not only aims for personal success but also hopes to inspire his fellow countrymen amidst the ongoing turmoil in Ukraine.
