Police transfer Jeong Jin-seok and Yoon Jae-soon to prosecution over 'suspicions of directing reset of presidential office PCs'

Police in South Korea have transferred former presidential chief of staff Jeong Jin-seok and former secretary Yoon Jae-soon to prosecutors over allegations of instructing the reset of computers at the presidential office following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The South Korean police investigating the special examination team case have forwarded the case of former presidential chief of staff Jeong Jin-seok and former secretary Yoon Jae-soon to prosecutors, under suspicion that they directed the reset of computers at the presidential office following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. The police stated that they have transferred the case without detention to the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office based on charges including damage to public electronic records, abuse of authority, and violations of the Presidential Records Management Act.

According to the allegations, Jeong and Yoon instructed the reset of about 1,000 computers in the presidential office just before the transition of duties to the new government last April after former President Yoon was impeached. Investigations prior by the special prosecutor's team revealed that Yoon Jae-soon allegedly ordered office staff to destroy the computers by putting them in a blast furnace, although the special prosecutor's investigation did not complete before the case was handed over to the police.

The police conducted separate investigations of both individuals earlier this month, but they did not apply for arrest warrants, believing that they have sufficient evidence to support the allegations without needing to detain them. A police official stated that they had gathered enough personnel and material evidence to confidently proceed with the prosecution without the necessity of arresting the two suspects.
