Monthly fees can drop to nearly a third by competing – the competition among mobile operators for customers is heating up

Competition among mobile operators in Finland significantly increased at the end of last year, leading to a remarkable rise in number porting and competitive pricing.

The competition among mobile operators in Finland intensified sharply towards the end of the previous year, as indicated by a substantial increase in the number of mobile number porting activities. In the last quarter of the year, from October to December, there were 304,539 number porting instances, which represents a 43% increase from the same period the previous year when only 212,706 transfers were recorded. This surge in activity marks a long-term record-breaking performance in number transfers, highlighting the aggressive marketing and competitive strategies employed by the operators.

According to Jyrki Martikainen, the CEO of Numpac, the company responsible for tracking number porting, December was notably exceptional, being the strongest month of the decade so far. The growth in number transfers can be attributed to eye-catching advertising and the entry of new operators into the market, which have stimulated customer interest and encouraged switching between providers. The largest operator, Elisa, noted a peak in market intensity during the last months of the year, indicating a highly competitive landscape.

Moreover, as operators become more aggressive in attracting customers, there is potential for monthly fees to drop significantly as a result of these competitive pressures. As each operator seeks to outdo the others in terms of pricing and services, consumers may benefit from lower costs and improved offerings. This scenario signifies a changing dynamic in the Finnish mobile telecom market, with customer-centric strategies driving the competitive landscape.
