Due to Hungary's Veto.. Europe Fails to Approve the 20th Package of Sanctions Against Russia
The European Union has failed to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia due to Hungary's veto.
On Monday, the European Union was unable to reach an agreement on its 20th package of sanctions against Russia because of Hungary's objections and use of veto power. This impasse was confirmed by EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, following discussions among foreign ministers in Brussels, who expressed concerns that a failure to unify in sanctions represents an unwanted setback for the EU's collective stance against Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
JΓΌri Ratas stated that Hungary's veto has posed significant challenges to the EU's efforts, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict and the need to apply pressure on Moscow. He emphasized that any resolution towards peace must address core issues, including acknowledgment of boundaries, cessation of sabotage, compensation of damages, and the return of deported Ukrainian children. This sentiment echoes wider calls within the EU to bolster efforts to sanction Russia and reinforce solidarity with Ukraine amid an evolving geopolitical landscape.
In tandem with these discussions, the EU announced additional measures aimed at minimizing Russian diplomatic presence by limiting the number of Russian embassy staff to 40 and restricting entry for former Russian military personnel into the Schengen area. These steps reflect a broader strategy of not tolerating the misuse of diplomatic privileges. The current stagnation highlights not only Hungary's influence within EU decision-making but also emphasizes the complexities involved in achieving a united front against Russia amidst differing national interests within the bloc.
