EU not agreed on sanctions package

The EU has been unable to reach a consensus on a new sanctions package against Russia, with Hungary threatening to veto the decision.

At a press conference in Brussels, EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas announced that the EU is currently not in agreement regarding a new sanctions package aimed at Russia. The goal was to finalize the 20th sanctions package prior to the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, differing opinions among member states, most notably Hungary's stance, have complicated consensus on the issue.

Hungary has indicated that it will use its veto power to block the new sanctions as well as a proposed loan of 90 billion Euros to Ukraine. This move by Hungary not only stalls the EU's collective efforts to counter Russia’s actions but also raises questions about the unity and effectiveness of the EU’s foreign policy. The potential vetoes from Hungary suggest that the country has its own agenda and priorities that might clash with broader EU efforts.

In the context of ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the failure to agree on the sanctions package is significant as it reflects the challenges the EU faces in presenting a united front against aggression. The implications of Hungary's decision could lead to delays in supporting Ukraine and send a message of division within the EU regarding the response to the war in Ukraine.
