Two more deaths confirmed as rainfall totals reach 19 fatalities in SP since December
The State Civil Defense of São Paulo has confirmed two additional deaths related to heavy rainfall, bringing the total to 19 fatalities since December.
The State Civil Defense of São Paulo reported on Monday that two more fatalities attributed to the severe rainfall recorded since the beginning of the SP Sempre Alerta – Rain Operation on December 1, 2025, have brought the total death toll to 19. This number is alarmingly close to last year's total of 23 deaths over the same operation period, showing a potential trend toward increasing fatalities in the region due to severe weather conditions.
The 18th fatality occurred on January 18 in Pirassununga when strong rains and winds caused a tree to fall onto a house, tragically resulting in the death of an 11-month-old child. The latest confirmed death is related to an elderly individual who was missing during the collapse of their home in Natividade da Serra; rescue teams located the body after thorough searches. These events underline the devastating impact of the weather on vulnerable populations, especially in areas susceptible to flooding and structural collapses.
In response to the rising number of casualties, the state government established a crisis management office on Monday at the Emergency Management Center of the Civil Defense. This initiative aims to enhance the coordination of emergency responses and strive to mitigate the loss of life caused by the ongoing rainfall. As the situation develops, state authorities are likely to implement further measures to safeguard residents in affected areas, heightening awareness and preparedness for extreme weather events.
