Civil Defense confirms 15th death in SP due to rain

The Civil Defense of São Paulo confirmed the 15th death related to heavy rains in the state during the rainy season operation.

The Civil Defense in São Paulo has reported the 15th death connected to the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in the state, with the current rainy season operation starting on December 1 and expected to conclude on March 31. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Barnabé creek area of Indaiatuba, near the central region of Campinas. This particular death was part of a broader issue that has prompted the Civil Defense to remain vigilant as the weather conditions continue to pose a risk to both residents and infrastructure.

The event leading to the death involved a team of workers who were engaged in a chemical and mineral oil leak containment operation in the creek. The situation escalated when a sudden surge of water, known as a 'cabeça d’água,' overturned their vessel. Tragically, one worker was swept away by the strong current during the incident. The Fire Department responded swiftly, deploying four vehicles and team members to locate the overturned boat, which was successfully found still the same day.

This incident highlights the dangers that severe weather poses to local communities, particularly in areas prone to flooding and rapid water flow changes. The ongoing operation is critical in managing not just the immediate impacts of flooding, but also in ensuring that residents receive the necessary information and support to navigate these challenging weather conditions. As rescue and recovery operations continue, there is an urgent need for effective preparedness measures in anticipation of future storms.
