Paes de Carvalho School Ceases Mandatory Skirt Requirement for School Uniform in Belém

Colégio Paes de Carvalho in Belém has ended the mandatory skirt requirement for school uniforms following a recommendation from the Pará Public Ministry and student consultations.

Colégio Paes de Carvalho, one of the most traditional schools in Belém, Brazil, has announced the discontinuation of the compulsory skirt requirement in its school uniform. This decision was influenced by a recommendation from the Public Ministry of Pará (MPPA) and a process of active listening with students, as stated by the State Department of Education (Seduc). This move is a significant shift towards respecting the individualities and well-being of the school community.

With this new change, students now have the freedom to choose between the traditional uniform or a new model that allows for greater flexibility in clothing options. The traditional uniform comprised a navy blue pleated skirt and white knee socks for girls, while boys wore navy blue trousers and a white and blue shirt. This alteration not only marks a departure from longstanding practices at the institution, which was established on July 28, 1841, but also signifies a broader trend towards inclusivity in educational environments.

Colégio Paes de Carvalho is recognized as the oldest public school still in operation in Pará, making this decision particularly notable. The change in the uniform policy reflects a commitment by the school and the educational authorities to adapt to contemporary values and the needs of students, which may influence other institutions in the area to reconsider their own uniform policies to foster a more inclusive atmosphere for all students.
