Is a formal school uniform really necessary...? Ministry of Education considers transition to everyday clothing

The South Korean Ministry of Education plans to investigate school uniform costs and discuss simplifying uniform categories in response to high prices and the burden on parents.

The South Korean Ministry of Education has initiated a nationwide survey to assess the costs of school uniforms in hopes of stabilizing prices amidst concerns over their affordability. This decision follows a directive from President Lee Jae-myung, who called on relevant departments to examine the issue of uniform pricing. During a recent meeting attended by various ministries, including the Fair Trade Commission and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, officials discussed the complexities involved in the current school uniform system and emphasized the necessity for reforms.

A significant point of discussion is the excessive range of uniform items that contributes to higher costs for parents. The Ministry's plans involve not only evaluating the prices of formal uniforms such as jackets and vests but also everyday wear and sports uniforms. Currently, many parents find themselves facing additional expenses due to the requirement to purchase not only formal uniforms but also daily and sports attire, which are often not covered by subsidies provided by local education authorities.

In light of these findings, the Ministry will convene a meeting with regional education offices to explore the feasibility of transitioning to a more simplified uniform policy focused on everyday clothing. Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin mentioned the need to reassess whether the formal uniform is necessary, highlighting the financial burden it places on families. The Ministry aims to gather feedback from parents and devise strategies to stabilize uniform prices for the upcoming school year, with discussions already planned for the 23rd to further examine the proposed changes and implement a more manageable uniform system.
