VIDEO: bridge collapses after heavy rains on BA-046 in the interior of Bahia

A bridge collapsed on BA-046 in Bahia following heavy rainfall that exceeded 150 millimeters.

A bridge collapsed on the BA-046 road in Bahia late Sunday night due to heavy rains impacting the region. According to the Iaçu city hall, over 150 millimeters of rain fell in just a few hours, compromising the bridge's structure and leading to its collapse on an asphalted section of the road. Videos from the following day show significant flooding and the extent of damage in the area, prompting the closure of the affected road.

The bridge connected the municipality of Iaçu to the Faustino village, a critical route for local residents. The city hall has informed that the distance from Iaçu to Faustino community is approximately 12 kilometers, with about 9 kilometers of that distance on the BA-046, where the bridge collapse occurred. Due to the road closure, traffic has been impacted, but residents are being directed to an alternative route through a mountain road that connects Faustino to the neighboring municipality of Nova Itarana.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of local infrastructure to extreme weather events, especially in regions prone to heavy rainfall. The collapse not only isolates communities but also raises concerns about safety and emergency response times, emphasizing the need for better drainage and maintenance of roadways in anticipation of severe weather conditions.
