Rains leave bridge submerged, families displaced, and cause a tree to fall on a car in the interior of Bahia

Heavy rains in Bahia have submerged a bridge, displaced families, and caused significant damage, including a fallen tree on a vehicle.

Bahia, Brazil, is currently under an orange alert due to intense rainfall, as reported by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The forecast predicts rainfall of between 30 and 60 millimeters per hour and a total of 50 to 100 millimeters per day, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 60 to 100 km/h. These weather conditions pose risks of power outages, fallen tree branches, flooding, and lightning strikes, creating a significant threat to the local population.

Since early Saturday morning, various cities in the interior of Bahia have experienced heavy rainfall, leading to flooding, the evacuation of families, and disruptions in roads and school transportation. In Itabuna, located in the southern part of the state, a bridge essential for regional mobility was submerged during the night of Friday (27) due to the rapidly rising river levels. Residents reported that the waters quickly covered the bridge, rendering it impassable overnight; however, as the waters receded in the morning, vehicles were once again able to cross the structure.

The ongoing weather situation has raised concerns among residents and local authorities as the impact continues to affect daily life in the region. Flooding not only displaces families but also threatens infrastructure and raises the potential for further dangers, such as landslides and electrical hazards. Local governments are expected to respond with emergency measures to assist affected families and to address the infrastructure challenges posed by these severe weather conditions.
