Heavy rain leaves 14 areas of Guayaquil damaged and causes a structural collapse

Strong rainfall in Guayaquil has resulted in significant damage across 14 sectors of the city and has caused a structural collapse in one area.

Overnight heavy rains from Sunday to Monday have wreaked havoc across various sectors in Guayaquil, Ecuador, leading to reports of damage in both the northern and southern parts of the city. Segura EP reported that by Monday morning, 14 different sectors were experiencing issues due to the intense rainfall, prompting emergency crews from Emapag and Interagua to mobilize and clear clogged drains to alleviate flooding.

The affected areas include major streets and neighborhoods such as Av. Perimetral, Av. Narcisa de JesΓΊs, and Floresta, among others. Residents are facing challenges as local authorities work to address the flooding and restore normalcy. There have been numerous reports of waterlogged streets and disrupted infrastructures, which highlight the vulnerability of urban areas to extreme weather events.

In addition to the widespread flooding, there was a structural collapse reported in Mapasingue Este, near the Fe y AlegrΓa school, underscoring the potential dangers posed by the heavy rain. This incident raises concerns about the reinforced structures in the city, indicating a need for better infrastructure resilience against such weather phenomena. The response from local authorities will be critical in the aftermath as they assess the extent of the damage and initiate recovery efforts.
