Police arrest two men in Maceió with 17 kg of crab claws during the animal's protection period
Two men were arrested in Maceió, Brazil, for illegal fishing during the protection period of the crab species, and over 17 kg of crab claws were seized.
In a significant enforcement action, the Batalhão de Polícia Ambiental arrested two suspects in Maceió, Brazil, for illegal possession of 17.60 kg of crab claws from the protected caranguejo-uçá species. The operation took place on Saturday in the Complexo Estuarino Lagunar Mundaú-Manguaba, an area critical for the crab's ecosystem. The suspects, aged 19 and 23, were captured in a region known as Ilha da Caveira, where they were found with 636 individual crabs in buckets, which they confessed were intended for commercial sale.
The caranguejo-uçá, currently in its protection period (defeso), is illegal to fish, emphasizing the ongoing challenges of environmental protection in Brazil's coastal regions. The police confirmed that the seized material was properly accounted for and donated to a philanthropic institution, Lar Samaritano Pastor Tavares, which highlights the community-oriented approach following law enforcement actions. The suspects also mentioned being accompanied by three additional individuals engaged in the illegal fishing, although those individuals have yet to be located.
This incident underscores the importance of environmental regulations in sustaining local wildlife and the role of law enforcement in combating illegal fishing practices. As environmental protections like the defeso period are critical to the conservation of the caranguejo-uçá, such enforcement actions are vital for preserving biodiversity in Brazil’s estuarine ecosystems, which face various threats from poaching and habitat loss.
