Capybara babies in Riga Zoo have been named – meet the fantastic five!

Five baby capybaras born in Riga Zoo last autumn have been given names after a creative selection process.

In a delightful announcement from Riga Zoo, five baby capybaras born last autumn have officially been given names following a thoughtful and creative selection process. Zoo representatives acknowledged that choosing names was not an easy task, as they received many inventive, clever, and heartfelt suggestions from the public. Ultimately, the chosen names are Andu, FrΔ«da, Straume, Tamis, and Maksimuss Otto, the latter being the first baby capybara and a godchild of 'Bite Latvia'.

These adorable capybaras now reside with three adult capybaras named Oskars and Tindra. This increase in the capybara population at the zoo illustrates a growing interest in these social animals, as the number of capybaras at the facility has expanded from three to eight in less than a month after the births. Visitors to the zoo can continue to enjoy watching these fascinating creatures online, as a live stream remains available, excluding a brief cleaning period from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The growing family of capybaras at Riga Zoo not only highlights the zoo's commitment to conservation and animal care but also engages the local community through initiatives like the naming competition. Such activities foster a connection between the zoo and its visitors, enhancing public interest in wildlife and the importance of protecting natural habitats.
