Crossings without barriers in Southern Jutland to be video-monitored

Six railway crossings on the line between Tinglev and Sønderborg will be temporarily monitored by video surveillance until barriers are installed in early 2027.

Banedanmark has announced that six railway crossings on the rail line between Tinglev and Sønderborg will be temporarily monitored by video surveillance until the installations of barriers are completed in the first half of 2027. This decision comes in response to two fatal accidents that occurred in 2025, where a 60-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man lost their lives at these crossings. The video monitoring is intended not only to ensure safety but also to provide data on illegal crossing activities.

The introduction of video surveillance is a proactive measure by Banedanmark to address safety concerns at these locations and to prevent future tragedies. The two deaths have raised awareness about the dangers of unprotected railway crossings, prompting the need for immediate action. By collecting data through the surveillance, Banedanmark aims to understand the frequency of illegal crossings and bolster enforcement measures if necessary.

Furthermore, the footage from the cameras may be shared with law enforcement if required. This approach underscores the commitment of Banedanmark to enhance safety around railway operations, particularly in the aftermath of tragic accidents. As the installation of proper barriers is awaited, the video system will serve as a temporary safeguard to monitor and manage risks at these critical points.
