Six Jutland railway crossings to receive temporary cameras after fatal accidents

Temporary video surveillance will be installed at six railway crossings in Jutland following fatal accidents, with a full setup of barriers expected by 2027.

In response to two fatal accidents in 2025, six railway crossings between Tinglev and SΓΈnderborg in Denmark will be equipped with temporary video surveillance until the installation of barriers is completed in the first half of 2027. This measure comes after a 60-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man lost their lives in accidents at these crossings, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures. Currently, the crossings have flashing lights and bells, but do not yet have the full barrier systems that will be implemented next year.

Banedanmark's safety chief, Martin Harrow, emphasized the dangers and legalities associated with crossing the railway when signals are active, pointing out that many motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians ignore these warnings, thus risking lives. The temporary cameras are intended to document such breaches of safety rules, with footage potentially being handed over to law enforcement if necessary. This approach aims to deter negligent behavior and enhance safety at these crucial transit points.

As the railway authorities move towards installing permanent solutions, this interim measure seeks to mitigate risks in the short term and raises awareness about the responsibilities of all road users at railway crossings. The future installation of barriers is anticipated to significantly reduce accidents and ensure safer crossings for all types of traffic, ultimately preventing further tragedies like those experienced in 2025.
