‘Disability-Friendly Hospitals’ to Be Operated Nationwide in Eight Locations by 2030

The South Korean government plans to designate and operate eight ‘Disability-Friendly Hospitals’ by 2030 to support the entire clinical process for people with disabilities.

The South Korean government has announced a comprehensive plan titled the 'First Comprehensive Plan for Health Management of People with Disabilities (2026-2030)' aimed at improving medical accessibility and health management for disabled individuals. This plan includes the establishment of eight 'Disability-Friendly Hospitals' across the country by 2030, which will assist with all aspects of medical treatment, including admission, examination, and payment. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce unmet healthcare utilization among people with disabilities, addressing transportation barriers and enhancing integrated care services.

The establishment of these hospitals will support a range of medical services, from diverse specialty consultations to communication assistance. This includes existing disabled-friendly institutions like women's health clinics and developmental disability hospitals, ensuring that at least one such facility is available in each region. Furthermore, the government plans to expand support for special transportation services to assist individuals with severe disabilities who have difficulty accessing hospitals. The goal is to lower the unmet medical service utilization rate among people with disabilities from 17.3% in 2023 to 16.4% by 2030.

In addition to medical treatment, the plan emphasizes support for reintegration into the community post-discharge through home nursing services and self-sufficiency initiatives, such as housing improvements, health screenings, and purchasing assistive devices for discharged individuals. Starting from March, community-level integration of nursing services and support for individuals with disabilities will be implemented across local governments. This initiative aims to ensure that people with disabilities receive comprehensive healthcare and rehabilitation services, enhancing their overall quality of life and health outcomes in South Korea.
