U.S. confirms intelligence support in operation against alias 'El Mencho'

The U.S. government confirmed it provided intelligence support to Mexico's operation that resulted in the death of Rubén Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The Trump administration announced that U.S. intelligence supported a Mexican operation that culminated in the elimination of Rubén Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, notorious as 'El Mencho', who was the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). According to White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, this operation took place in Talpalpa, Jalisco, where El Mencho was killed, highlighting the cooperation between the two governments in combating drug trafficking and organized crime. El Mencho was identified as a high-priority target due to his significant role as a trafficker of fentanyl into the United States.

The U.S. has been particularly concerned about the influx of fentanyl from Mexico, which has significantly contributed to the opioid crisis in the country. The confirmation of this operation comes as part of broader efforts by both nations to combat the influence and power of drug cartels that operate in Mexico. The White House also revealed that during this operation, in addition to El Mencho, three other cartel members were killed, and further arrests were made, indicating a significant blow to the cartel's operations.

The implications of this intelligence-sharing and operational support could lead to further collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico in the fight against drug cartels. As both countries continue to face challenges related to drug trafficking, such partnerships may set a precedent for future operations targeting other cartel leaders, ultimately aiming to reduce the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States and enhance security along the shared border.
