Mexico confirms death of 'El Mencho', leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel
The Mexican government confirmed the death of Rubén Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, during a military operation supported by U.S. authorities.
The Mexican Secretary of National Defense announced the death of Rubén Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, popularly known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). This confirmation follows an operation carried out in Tapalpa, Jalisco, which involved the collaboration of U.S. authorities. In addition to El Mencho, four other CJNG members were killed, and three were severely injured during the confrontation, while three military personnel also suffered injuries and required hospitalization for further treatment.
The operation showcased a significant level of coordination and intelligence sharing between Mexican military forces and U.S. agencies. The memorial statement emphasized that apart from the central military intelligence efforts, essential information was provided by U.S. authorities to identify and locate El Mencho. This reveals the deepening ties between Mexico and the United States in combating powerful drug cartels, which have been responsible for an escalation in violence in Mexico.
El Mencho’s death marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict with organized crime in Mexico and is expected to have far-reaching implications for the CJNG's operations and the broader landscape of drug trafficking in the region. It remains to be seen how this loss will affect the cartel's power dynamics and whether it might lead to further violence as rival factions vie for control over drug trafficking routes in Mexico.
