Chungbuk Danyang Wildfire Extinguished... 'Elderly Man Lit Fire to Avoid the Cold'

A wildfire in Danyang, South Korea, was extinguished after nearly six hours, reportedly caused by an elderly man attempting to stay warm by lighting a fire.

In the early hours of the 23rd, a wildfire broke out in a mountainous area of Danyang County, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea. It took approximately five hours and fifty minutes for fire authorities to bring the main blaze under control, deploying five helicopters and 46 fire engines, along with a workforce of 535 personnel. By around 7:50 AM, the main fire was contained, and efforts were underway to extinguish the remaining hotspots. Though no injuries were reported, around 50 local residents were evacuated to safety as a precaution.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the fire, which charred about 3.5 hectares of land, was ignited when an elderly individual lit some branches to shield himself from the cold. Authorities are currently investigating him to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. A representative from the forest authority remarked that even minor negligence that leads to a forest fire can result in severe consequences for the offender, including potential imprisonment for up to three years or fines of up to 30 million won under the Forest Disaster Prevention Act.

This incident underscores the persistent challenges posed by wildlife management and safety, particularly during colder months when individuals may resort to unsafe measures for warmth. The local community's swift evacuation and the effective response by firefighting teams helped prevent what could have been a more catastrophic event, highlighting the importance of preparedness and prompt action in the face of natural disasters.
