VIDEO: Drunk Portuguese driver goes the wrong way, hits off-duty military police officer, and causes death in the East Zone of SP
A drunk Portuguese driver caused the death of an off-duty police officer in São Paulo after hitting him while driving the wrong way.
On Sunday morning in the East Zone of São Paulo, a drunk driver from Portugal struck and killed off-duty military police officer Diego Richard Ferreira de Souza while he was riding his motorcycle. The incident occurred at the intersection of Avenida São Miguel and Rua Itamarati de Minas in the Ponte Rasa area when the driver signaled and turned left into oncoming traffic, colliding with the motorcycle, which was reportedly traveling over the 50 km/h speed limit. Security camera footage captured the moment of the accident, showing the motorcycle being launched towards a wall after the impact.
The dramatic footage reveals the severity of the crash, with Officer Diego’s motorcycle being propelled away, highlighting the reckless nature of the driver's actions. Despite not being in uniform and wearing civilian clothes and a helmet, Diego was actively performing his duties as a police officer. Initial reports indicate that he was quickly taken by ambulance to Hospital Ermelino, where he received emergency treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
This incident raises significant concerns about road safety and the consequences of driving under the influence. Not only does it illustrate the dangers faced by motorcyclists on Brazilian roads, but it also reflects the broader issue of impaired driving and the responsibilities of other drivers to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. The police and local authorities are likely to pursue legal action against the driver, whose reckless behavior led to this tragic loss of life.
