Portuguese tourist makes illegal turn and kills police officer in motorcycle accident in eastern São Paulo

A police officer in São Paulo was killed in a motorcycle accident caused by a Portuguese tourist who made an illegal turn and was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

On Sunday morning, a tragic accident occurred in eastern São Paulo, resulting in the death of a police officer returning home from work. The officer was riding his motorcycle when a Hyundai HB20, driven by a Portuguese tourist, struck him after the driver executed an illegal turn. According to the military police, the tourist was found to have consumed alcohol, as determined by a breathalyzer test conducted at the scene of the accident.

The incident took place on Avenida São Miguel, near the junction of Cangaíba and Vila Ré, where the tourist was attempting to turn onto Itamarati de Minas Street, an action that was prohibited due to the direction of traffic. Security camera footage captured the moment of the collision, indicating the tourist's vehicle approached from the opposite direction. The police officer, a member of the 8th Battalion in Tatuapé, was rushed to Municipal Hospital of Ermelino Matarazzo but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

This incident raises concerns regarding traffic safety and the consequences of impaired driving, particularly for tourists who may be unfamiliar with local traffic regulations. The police have emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic laws to prevent such avoidable tragedies and remind citizens of the dangers posed by driving under the influence, highlighting a broader need for awareness and compliance with road safety measures in urban areas like São Paulo.
